With an installed generation capacity of about 13 gigawatts (GW) and a distribution capacity of about 4 GW, the key figures in Nigeria are well below the expected capacity for a population of more than 200 million. According to the World Bank, Nigeria’s energy per capita is set at 145kWh per year, making it one of the countries with the lowest energy Per capita in Africa. In addition, Nigeria’s current electrification rate is less than 60%, and energy demand will continue to rise due to the rapidly growing population and economy.

Renewable Energy in Nigeria – A Market with Huge Growth Potential

As a result of the frequent outages experienced on the grid, most of the country’s companies and households are dependent on their own supply of mainly diesel- or petrol-powered generators, with electricity production costs of US$0.24 to US$0.42 (₦90 to ₦159/kWh) compared to US$0.12 to US$0.15 (₦45 to ₦57/kWh) from the power grid. This in turn leads to pollution, higher production costs for companies, and increased living costs for households.

The Nigerian government’s National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAPs) for the electricity sector have created several framework conditions for the use of renewable energies. Nigeria Vision 30:30:30 supports the implementation of 30,000 MW of installed capacity, with a share of at least 30% renewable energy by 2030, and with targets for installed PV capacity of 2,000 MW by 2020, and 5,000 MW by 2030.

Nigeria Has Adopted International RE Standards

The Nigerian National Technical Committee on Electrical/Electronics (E/E) has recommended 12 PICO PV systems (micro systems) standards, a guide for renewable energy and hybrid systems for rural electrification, to the Nigerian Standards Council for adoption as Nigerian Industrial Standards.

International RE Standards 

Founded in 1906, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the world’s leading organisation for the preparation and publication of International Standards for all electrical, electronic, and related technologies. These are known collectively as ‘electrotechnology’.

IEC provides a platform to companies, industries and governments for meeting, discussing, and developing the International Standards they require.

All IEC International Standards are fully consensus-based and represent the needs of key stakeholders of every nation participating in IEC work. Each member country, no matter how large or small, has one vote, and a say in what goes into an IEC International Standard.

Adoption of IEC standards by any country is entirely voluntary, whether or not it is a member of the Commission.

IEC Affiliate Country Programme

Launched in 2001, the IEC Affiliate Country Programme is aimed at developing countries around the world, and Nigeria is part of it. The Programme offers such countries a form of participation in the IEC without the financial burden of actual membership, making full use of IEC 100% electronic environment. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has complimented the IEC on the creation of the programme, which provides an appropriate tool to enhance participation in International Standardization from WTO Members in developing countries.
