The Rural Electrification Fund (REF) is a fund administered by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to promote the expansion of the grid, and off-grid electrification. It is funded by government surplus, fines obtained by NERC, and gifts and donations from third parties.
Solar PV, hydropower, wind, biomass, hybrid systems, intermittent generation technologies. REF would support a combination of renewable and conventional power generation sources. However, all solutions supported by the REF shall fall under the category of renewable energy, having a minimum of 30% penetration by a renewable energy source or a combination of them.
Size of investment
US$10,000 – US$300,000, or 75% of the total capital costs of the project, whichever is less.
